What is the Conscious Mind?

Posted on: 01-17-2011 Posted in: FAQ's Mind Body Spirit

Self Enlightenment

The Conscious Mind: Most people are aware of their Conscious Mind; it’s the part of your consciousness that tries to make sense of the world.  The conscious mind develops throughout our life especially during the early years and is a filtering system for the information we receive from our 6 senses and subconscious mind. The Conscious mind has many different mind filters that organise information and our awareness of it! The important thing to remember is that the conscious mind generalises the information we receive and just give us an awareness of the information we need.

The main conscious mind filters are:

  • Sensory Filters: See, hear, touch, taste, smell and ESP
  • Language Filters: Interpretation of words
  • Strategy Filter: What to do with the information and how to store it
  • Beliefs & Values: Accept or not accept according to beliefs
  • Memory Filters: The way your mind records information
  • Time & Space Filter: Storing Information on a linear time frame

When we feel that information is coming at us too quickly most people use another great mental tool ‘internal dialogue’ when you talk to yourself inside your head. By doing this we can slow down our mental thought process. Sometimes even this is not enough so to slow down our thought process and many people find talking to themselves out-loud, helps. The louder we talk the more control we think we have over our thought process. Some people can take this need to slow down thoughts to a totally new level by talking out-loud and with their hands. The more parts of your body you uses the easier it is to slow down your brain. Sometimes very clever people use all these skill to slow down a highly intelligent brain that has not learnt how to cope with processing such vast amounts of sensory information and other thought processes on a simultaneous level. These people go into sensory overload and can appear to be in another world and the outside world could view them as autistic or cursed with some kind of behavioural or learning difficulty.
